The following information is very out of date: it is taken more or less verbatim from Appendix D of version 0.3b of the profile, which dates back to July 1999.

UNIverse aims to investigate and develop technology to implement large-scale, virtual union catalogue systems based on open standards. Zthes is used in a query-conversion tool which uses a multilingual thesaurus to help with language-conversion of queries between different databases.
